Recently, I gave a presentation about applying for scholarships to students at the just concluded conference of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in CapeTown South Africa.
I thought it would be nice to summarize the main points for you.
There are 4 major requirements for scholarship applications:
1.) Mind-set: Refine your mindset and acquire a growth mindset. A growth mindset believes that intelligence can be developed, views failure as an opportunity, embrace challenges and welcomes feedback. Your scholarship applications will definitely be better if you acquire a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset.
2.) Research proposal: Research about the research idea and develop an excellent proposal. Isaac Newton said “If I have seen further, it is by standing on shoulder of giants”. Therefore i recommend these steps for developing your research proposal:
- First reading: Read wide to inform yourself about possible research gaps
- Select a specific research area for further research
- Second reading: Read deeply to define your research questions
- Write out your research ideas in bullet points
- Expand your ideas one step at a time to develop your proposal
- Send it to a reviewer
3.) Motivation statement: The only way to impress and make your statement distinct is to write from the bottom of your heart
- Why you: challenges growing up, related passion, what you have done so far
- Why this: specialty of the school or program, funding needed, the significance of the grant to you
- Why now: emphasize the problem and your proposed solution
4.) Recommendation letter: Not just any letter
- Request from published academics or professionals
- Request from someone who knows your strengths
- Request them to write a heart felt letter specially for you and not a copy from other students
- Submit your CV to them for proper appraisal
