ELIGIBILITY:

To apply for the JJ/WBGSP scholarship you must be a developing country national, not be a dual citizen of any developed country, hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent university degree) earned before 2013, be under 45 years old on the Application Deadline date, and have at least 3 years of recent development-related experience since earning a Bachelor’s degree. Most importantly, you must commit to returning home to your country on graduation in order to use your enhanced knowledge and skills towards your community’s, country’s, or region’s development. Those receiving a scholarship are barred from working at the World Bank Group for three years following graduation from the preferred master’s program.

REQUIREMENTS:

Two qualified assessors independently review each eligible application and score the application on a scale of 1 to 10, taking into account four main factors and the degree of cohesion among them:

(i)    Quality of Professional Experience  (30% weight)

(ii)  Quality of Professional Recommendations  (30% weight)

(iii)Quality of Commitment to your Home Country (30% weight)

(iv) Quality of Education Background  (10% weight)

SCHOLARSHIP VALUE:

The Joint Japan / World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) scholarship is fully funded by the Government of Japan and provides for the recipient only the following benefits:

  • economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the start of your study program and immediately following the end of the scholarship period. In addition to the two-way air travel, developing country national scholars will receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip;
  • tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance usually obtained through the university. Please noteall JJ/WBGSP partner and preferred masters programs are 2 years or less and the scholarship covers the duration of the program;
  • a monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books, while you are studying at the preferred masters program. The amount of the allowance varies depending on the host country.
